Finger  Picking

Are you tired of playing single lines flat picking with a plectrum?

Are you bored with just strumming your guitar?

Then why not become a real acoustic player and learn to finger pick or finger style.  God gave you 4 plectrums—your thumb and first three fingers—you could add your ‘pinkie’ but that would just be showing off!!

Finger picking can bring a whole new dimension to your playing and if you write your own tunes, your own music.

I have had ‘flirtations’ with flat picking, but found it too restrictive.  Doing nothing but strumming a guitar is ok for beginners, but if you are ever to be taken seriously on acoustic, you should learn to play finger style.  And for electric players it can be a revelation—just ask Mark Knopfler!

The late Chet Atkins was one of the greatest finger style players ever.  He took finger style from its folk and country roots and took it into the realms of the electro-acoustic guitar (click here for a video clip)
